SLOE members, along with other residents of Old Ottawa East, are still thinking through what projects we can take on to improve Old Ottawa East’s energy profile in terms of both improved efficiency and alternative energy systems.
Our community will almost certainly be experiencing significant new development in the near future, and it is important that new buildings meet leading standards of efficiency. Moreover, especially in the likely event of significant new residential development on the Oblate lands, we would like to see alternative energy opportunities pursued. Some of these ideas will be reflected in the Old Ottawa East Community Design Plan [hot link], but we need to find other ways to promote their implementation.
As importantly, there are many opportunities to improve the energy profile of our existing buildings. SLOE is exploring ways to facilitate the uptake of domestic solar hot water systems in our community. We are also considering a campaign to make Old Ottawa East a leader in terms of the number of subscribers to Bullfrog Power – a leading Canadian provider of 100% green (clean, renewable) electricity. There are many other ways to reduce energy use and shift our power sources in our homes and commercial and institutional spaces. And the more we do in this regard, the more credibility we have to argue for significant steps in new development in Ottawa East.
