Children’s Community Garden- Minutes January 18th, 2008

Introducing Jaime Fay, coop student at SHCHC who will be working on the ChG ap. 2 days/week, to help with meeting coordination, community organizing, etc. (TBD)

·         Discussion concerning article in Mainstreeter Community Newspaper (Catherine will write the article)

·         Chris – Support letter will be coming

·         Leah - will be finishing the application for funding

·          GUO - Support letter will be coming

·         Lady Evelyn School - Support letter will be coming

·         Leah needs to keep a copy of everything regarding proposal

·         Jaime will keeping minutes and critical files and pass on at end of term

 

·         Community foundation of Ottawa - discussion of application for proposal

Ø       target age group should be open – including under 6 to ensure consideration by range of funders

Ø       verifying insurance (liability) just to make sure it is not an issue

Ø       consistency in using the term ‘Old Ottawa East’

·         Discussion of project budget

Ø       Water collection (ie; hose from neighbours, water tank, etc.)

Ø       Water feature (less than 3 feet- no fence). May create problems since our Parks and Recreation contact for negotiating an agreement has a conservative bent. We also need to think about who this will impact (neighbours??). Remove explicit line re water feature, but increase costs of other line items to enable revisiting of options.

Ø       Change Tree Removal section to Tree Maintenance

·         Children to have a major influence over what the garden will look like

·         Get some ideas for outreach to other children and to community

·         Seating needed for garden (benches 1,500$ each approx)

·         Add something about evaluation about the project (in proposal)

·         Erin and Leah to work on application for Evergreen

·         Verify whether constraints on using power tools in parks

·         Have an ad in the Mainstreeter concerning volunteers (on how to get involved)

·         Need a volunteer coordinator

·          Board- magnetic board with features, provide input on programming ideas

·         Letter to neighbours – address any potential concerns about project: noise, compost, rats, mosquitoes, safety, criminal activity, vandalism

·         Ask neighbours input – mention we welcome their help (this will be in the Mainstreeter)
